The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) would like to hear from our students about their latest accomplishments so we can include them in Laurels, which is a roundup of student, faculty, and staff achievements that is published 11 times a year in The President’s Message newsletter.
Please email your Laurels to StudentLaurels@umaryland.edu for consideration. The Office of Communications and Public Affairs’ (OCPA) editorial team will review and compile these Laurels for inclusion under your specific school. (Please note that submission does not guarantee publication.)
Accepted Laurels include:
- Articles, studies, and manuscripts published in high-impact journals
- Presentations at conferences, annual meetings, or symposiums
- Invitations to conferences, annual meetings, or symposiums that are gained via competitive process
- Awards, fellowships, and other prestigious recognition
- Grants from the National Institutes of Health and other federal or state agencies, non-governmental organizations, and philanthropic foundations
- Appearances on radio shows, TV news, and podcasts
The Laurels submission guidelines for students are as follows:
General
Items should be 50 words or fewer, be related to your role as a UMB student, and include the following information:
- Student name — including already earned advanced degree if any (master’s and above) — and school
- Title or brief description of honor or published material
- Name of organization/business presenting the honor, or the publication printing the written material — please indicate the type of publication, such as journal, magazine, or online newsletter
- Date and place the honor was announced or presented (if applicable)
Photos
- Headshot photos that are submitted should be high-resolution only.
- Headshots generated by artificial intelligence (AI) programs will not be accepted.
Here are some best practices for submitting photos:
- Please find the most recent high-resolution photos that are in focus, and “save as ...” onto your computer, rather than dragging and dropping images from the web.
- If the photo looks small on the screen, then it’s too small.
- Photos meant for combined web-and-PDF use, like those used in The President’s Message, need to be bigger than photos just meant for the web only.
Our goal is to get as many new faces as possible in the Laurels. If a student’s headshot has appeared in the previous newsletter, we will use the text of the new item but likely not the photo. The use of headshots is at the discretion of the OCPA editorial and design teams after assessing the submissions.
