Faculty in the School of Dentistry's Department of Comprehensive Dentistry are celebrating new national recognition for their research. Drs. Mary Anne Melo, Isadora Garcia, and Guilherme Arossi have been awarded $25,000 in funding from the American Association for Implant Dentistry (AAID) Foundation to support their study, Dysbiosis Across Peri-Implantitis.

Their research examines how the peri-implant microbiome shifts from health to disease — and how those microbial changes drive inflammation and bone loss around dental implants. By better understanding these transitions, the team aims to support earlier detection and more personalized prevention strategies for peri-implantitis, a leading cause of dental implant failure.

This work reinforces UMSOD’s commitment to advancing evidence-based care and improving long-term outcomes for patients receiving implant treatment.
