Malaysia Harrell

The University of Maryland School of Social Work (UMSSW) is proud to recognize Malaysia Harrell, PhD, MSW '02, LICSW, LCSW-C, BCD, UMSSW Alumni Board of Directors president and adjunct professor whose service, leadership, and personal reflection were recently highlighted during a 25th anniversary ceremony commemorating Sept. 11 at the Veterans Services Center.

During the ceremony, Harrell, a retired Air Force captain, was presented with a Quilt of Valor, a national recognition offered by the Quilts of Valor Foundation to service members and veterans who have been touched by war. The quilt, presented as a visible expression of gratitude and comfort, held particular meaning for Harrell as she reflected on the events of Sept. 11, 2001, and the lasting impact they had on her life.

“Sept. 11 is the day that changed the trajectory of my life and ultimately inspired me to serve in the military,” Harrell shared during the ceremony.

As she spoke, Harrell was draped in the quilt while Quilts of Valor Foundation volunteer Susan Petrakes looked on — an intimate moment that connected personal memory, military service, and community appreciation. Her remarks underscored the enduring significance of 9/11 for those who chose careers in service in the years that followed.

For Harrell, the recognition represented more than an individual honor. It reflected the shared experiences of service members, veterans, families, and communities who continue to carry the legacy of that day. The ceremony also served as a reminder of the importance of creating spaces where veterans can be recognized not only for their service, but for the humanity, resilience, and stories they bring to their communities and professional lives.

UMSSW celebrates Harrell’s commitment to service and her willingness to share a deeply personal part of her journey. Her experience reflects the values of courage, compassion, and connection that are central to social work — and reinforces the importance of honoring those whose lives have been shaped by service to others.

Dr. Harrell’s recognition was featured by the Frederick News-Post in coverage of the 9/11 anniversary ceremony, which highlighted the Quilts of Valor presentation and the meaningful connections formed among veterans and volunteers.
