‘Social Work is Everywhere’ Podcast: BHWISE Alumni Share Experiences in Substance Use and Behavioral Health
October 12, 2026
How can specialized training prepare social workers to support the behavioral health and well-being of communities? Explore this question in the latest episode of the "Social Work is Everywhere" podcast, “Invested in the Behavioral Health and Well-Being of Communities: BHWISE Fellowship Program.”
Latavia Little introduces UMSSW’s Behavioral Health Workforce Integration Service and Educational (BHWISE) fellowships, with a focus on the two-year Substance Use Disorders Interventions Fellowship (SUDIF). The fellowship provides MSW students with specialized training, financial stipends, and dedicated practicum placements in exchange for a two-year postgraduation service commitment in substance use disorder treatment.
MSW alumni Avon Bryant and Shatera Hillyard, Class of 2024, share their fellowship experiences — from applying to SUDIF and navigating additional coursework to developing skills through practicum placements. They also discuss lessons in meeting clients where they are, integrating substance use and mental health treatment, and applying their training to their current roles and future career goals.
Watch the episode to hear their perspectives and learn how BHWISE supports careers in substance use and behavioral health.
