The University of Maryland Medical Center's R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center is conducting two research studies on patients with severe traumatic brain injury (TBI).
HOBIT is a study to identify the best way to deliver high-dose oxygen under pressure (hyperbaric oxygen) so that TBI patients can recover with less disability. BOOST-3 is a study that compares two strategies for monitoring and treating TBI patients. One strategy concentrates on preventing high intracranial pressure caused by a swollen brain. The other strategy prevents high intracranial pressure and also low brain oxygen levels.
Because head injury is a life-threatening condition requiring immediate treatment, some patients will be enrolled without consent if a family member or representative cannot be rapidly available.
