Attention, all student researchers and public health enthusiasts: The Maryland Public Health Association (MdPHA) is pleased to announce a call for abstracts for its 2019 Annual Conference and Student Poster Competition.

Every year, students from graduate and undergraduate programs across Maryland present their research on current or emerging public health issues. This year’s theme is Truth Matters: Science and Public Health.

When: Thursday, Oct. 17

Where: Bowie State University

Abstract submission

When submitting the abstract, please be sure to provide complete contact information for the presenter (name, mailing address, email, and telephone number). The abstract should include title, lead author and co-authors, with their affiliation, research objective, study design, population studied, principal findings, conclusions, implications for policy, delivery, or practice (especially within Maryland), and funding source (if applicable). Be sure to limit the body of the abstract to 300 words.

Research that has been previously presented at or submitted to another conference is eligible for submission. However, research that has been accepted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal is not eligible for submission.

Evaluation of abstracts

All abstracts are to follow the format specified above. A committee from the MdPHA membership will evaluate the abstracts based on the following criteria:

  • Quality and originality
  • Potential significance to the field of public health
  • Timeliness
  • Clarity of writing and presentation
  • Relevance in Maryland

Notification

Applicants will be notified by Oct. 4 as to whether your abstract is selected for presentation. If accepted, you are expected to register for the meeting (at the reduced cost of $25) and be available to present your poster.

Awards

First place: $200 and free annual membership to MdPHA
Second place: $100 and free annual membership to MdPHA
Third place: $50 and free annual membership to MdPHA
