September 27, 2022 Angela OberHappy one-year anniversary to the Office of Sustainability! The report details UMB’s history of campus sustainability and celebrates notable achievements during Fiscal Year 2022.
The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) Office of Sustainability was established in September 2021. Since then, the office has been working hard to implement sustainability initiatives across campus. The Office of Sustainability has released its Fiscal Year 2022 Impact Report, summarizing its accomplishments from September 2021 through June 2022. You can find the report on the Strategic Plan Reports page or view the FY 2022 Sustainability Impact Report (PDF) here.
The report details UMB’s history of campus sustainability, from the first commitment to climate in 2008 to President Bruce E. Jarrell’s creation of the Office of Sustainability last fall. Major notable achievements from Fiscal Year 2022 include:
- President Jarrell re-signing onto the Second Nature Climate Commitment in October 2021
- The Office of Sustainability publishing its Sustainability Strategic Plan in January 2022
- Restructured Sustainability Committee Working Groups beginning their meetings in January and February 2022
- Earth Month programming in April 2022

- UMB’s greenhouse gas inventory being updated and reported to Second Nature in May 2022
- Chesapeake Bay Trust awarding UMB funding through the Urban Trees grant in June 2022
The Office of Sustainability has been working hard to engage students, faculty, and staff campuswide by creating and launching a comprehensive website, revamping former Go Green social media accounts, creating stories and announcements in the Elm, launching its monthly newsletter, and partnering with other departments and offices to plan events with sustainability in mind.
That’s not all for the Office of Sustainability. Its work and the partnerships it creates across campus continue to grow. Be on the lookout for more initiatives and events in Fiscal Year 2023!
