A new Digital Health Advisory Board, formed by the UM Ventures, Baltimore team, is helping strengthen digital health innovation and commercialization at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB).
Digital health technologies — which include everything from wearable devices to health information technology (IT) to telemedicine to personalized medicine — are changing the way health care is delivered and received. This increasingly important industry has strong enthusiasm from inventors, entrepreneurs, investors, businesses, and individuals. The current global market size is estimated to be in the hundreds of billions of dollars, and it is expected to grow substantially over the next 10 years.
To support the growth of digital health technologies at UMB, the team at UM Ventures, Baltimore — UMB’s technology transfer and commercialization arm — surveyed faculty about their interest and work in digital health technology development. The survey was intended to identify critical resources that would increase support of such technologies, which may require different support than more traditional therapeutic and device technologies. The results exposed a wealth of potential.
One of the top requests was connecting and fostering collaboration between faculty members heavily invested and interested in digital health technologies. In response, the UM Ventures, Baltimore team created the Digital Health Advisory Board (DHAB) to provide guidance and insight while also building the digital health community at UMB.
Composed of academic leaders spanning many of UMB’s key academic units and specialties, as well as Santosh Venkantesha, one of UMB’s Entrepreneurs-in-Residence and a successful health care IT entrepreneur, the DHAB and the UM Ventures, Baltimore team are working together to promote and advance digital health initiatives at UMB.
To help build the digital health community at UMB, the UM Ventures, Baltimore team and the DHAB are developing targeted resources, including networking events, seminars, funding opportunities, and training and education programs. Future initiatives will work to expand collaboration across UMB and among other University System of Maryland campuses, including the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and the University of Maryland, College Park.
Join the DHAB and UM Ventures, Baltimore for the first digital health event on Tuesday, June 13, at 4 p.m. Led by Phil Robilotto, the associate vice president for technology transfer at UMB, and Chris Meenan, an experienced digital health entrepreneur, the event will focus on moving digital technologies out of the lab and into the market.
