Distinguished University Professors

The title of Distinguished University Professor is a recognition not just of excellence, but also of impact and significant contribution to the nominee’s field, knowledge, profession, and/or practice.


University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) President Bruce E. Jarrell, MD, FACS, announced in a letter to the University community May 22, 2023, that eight UMB professors have been designated as Distinguished University Professors:

  • William T. Carpenter, MD, University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM)
  • Robert K. Ernst, PhD, University of Maryland School of Dentistry
  • Claire Fraser, PhD, UMSOM
  • Donald G. Gifford, JD, University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law
  • Geoffrey Greif, PhD, MSW, LCSW-C, University of Maryland School of Social Work 
  • Margaret M. "Peg" McCarthy, PhD, UMSOM
  • Fadia T. Shaya, PhD, MPH, University of Maryland School of Pharmacy
  • J. Marc Simard, MD, PhD, UMSOM
