Derrick Whiting, a Master of Social Work candidate at the University of Maryland School of Social Work, has been named a winner of the 2024 Baltimore Homecoming Heroes Award. This prestigious award recognizes community and nonprofit leaders, activists, artists, and innovators who have made significant contributions to Baltimore.
In announcing the five winners, Baltimore Homecoming said, “Each hero has dedicated themselves to bettering the Baltimore community in a unique and monumental way.”
Whiting’s work with the Flowers Whiting Initiative, which focuses on supporting returning citizens and families impacted by the criminal justice system, earned him this recognition.
“His organization is a beacon of hope, providing pathways to reintegration for formerly incarcerated individuals through training and advocacy,” Baltimore Homecoming said. “His leadership and commitment to fostering positive change in Baltimore have made a significant impact on countless lives, solidifying his role as a true champion for the community.”
Whiting said he was deeply honored to receive the award.
“While my work is driven by a commitment to serve others selflessly, it feels incredibly validating to be recognized, especially as someone who has often felt like the underdog,” he said. “This opportunity not only acknowledges our efforts but also opens doors to new networks, allowing us to reach more people and sustain the vital work we do.”
Whiting and the other winners will share their stories on stage during a Baltimore Homecoming event next year. The winners were chosen by a public online vote.
Whiting also was one of 13 community leaders selected by The Baltimore Banner for its 2024 class of Emerging Leaders, which recognizes the next generation of community leaders and the impact they are making in Baltimore and throughout Maryland.
