A group of 651 people from the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) —  faculty, staff, students, alumni, friends, and family — attended the Baltimore Orioles’ game against the Detroit Tigers at Camden Yards on Sept. 20, cheering on the home team to a 7-1 victory.

The group took advantage of the UMB Night at Oriole Park promotion in which the Orioles offered members of the University community a chance to buy tickets in the Lower Box (Sections 60-62) or Lower Reserve (Sections 55-69) areas at a reduced price.

Before the game, UMB was recognized as a “Heavy Hitter,” a designation given to groups that buy more than 250 tickets to a game. University of Maryland School of Medicine Dean Mark T. Gladwin, MD, represented UMB on the field during the “Heavy Hitter” ceremony.

Nancy Gordon, executive director of protocol and special events in the Office of External Relations, was pleased with the turnout, saying the goal for next year’s UMB Night at Oriole Park is to sell 750 tickets, which would allow a University representative to throw out the ceremonial first pitch.

“My contact in the Orioles’ ticket department told me UMB did a fabulous job in selling tickets,” Gordon said. “And now we have something to shoot for next year: 750! We thank everyone from UMB who came out to support the ticket promotion and the Orioles.”
