As part of Montgomery County, Maryland 2024 Seasonal Flu Vaccination Campaign, UMSON first-semester Bachelor of Science in Nursing students at the Universities at Shady Grove administered flu vaccine to the public -- and to some family members!
Nursing student Madelyn Yi (pictured) gave her grandfather his annual influenza vaccine. The clinic is a partnership between the Montgomery County Health Department and the University System of Maryland. Over a two-day period, on Oct. 16 and 23, students engaged with the public, demonstrating their assessment skills by evaluating a patient's health history to ensure they were eligible for the vaccine, explained the benefits and potential side effects of the flu vaccine to patients, and administered the vaccine with the correct technique they had practiced in lab.
Students administered 265 flu vaccinations. They were excited to have a hands-on experience directly helping to prevent the spread of the flu virus. Flu clinics are one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of influenza.
