On Feb. 13, UMSON’s Booked for Lunch club gathered to discuss the book The Black Angels: The Untold Story of the Nurses Who Helped Cure Tuberculosis. They were joined by author Maria Smilios and by Virginia Allen, the last surviving “Black Angel,” in a conversation moderated by Yvette Conyers, DNP, MS, RN, FNP-C, CTN-B, CFCN, CFCS, CNE, assistant professor and associate dean for equity, diversity, and inclusion
The Black Angels tells the story of the Black nurses who were recruited from across the Jim Crow South to work at Sea View Hospital on Staten Island during the peak of the tuberculosis pandemic. The book documents their heroic efforts to care for tuberculosis patients despite insurmountable obstacles, which ultimately led to the cure in the 1950s.
Booked for Lunch comes together every other month to read, watch, and discuss literature and other materials on diversity, equity, inclusion, social justice, and professional development. If you are interested in joining, please fill out this form or email Emily New.
