Fathers Fighting 4 Fathers

This event not only provided valuable health services but also strengthened the sense of community among fathers and father figures.

In celebration of Father’s Day, Charles Rodwell Elementary and Middle School hosted a special gathering focused on the health and well-being of fathers and father figures in the community. The event, “Dads and Father Figures’ Healthy Check-Up,” was organized by Fathers Fighting 4 Fathers — a dedicated community partner — and supported by B’more for Healthy Babies (BHB) at the University of Maryland School of Social Work’s Center for Restorative Change.

A total of 32 father figures participated, including biological fathers, bonus dads, educators, school staff, and administrators. The event provided blood pressure screenings and personalized educational counseling to each attendee. Participants learned how unresolved trauma and loss can contribute to elevated blood pressure and overall health challenges. They also received guidance on heart-healthy eating habits to support cardiovascular health. Each father was encouraged to establish and maintain a relationship with a primary care provider and to schedule annual checkups, emphasizing the importance of self-care practices and seeking mental health support when needed.

BHB is able to carry out this important work as a member of the University of Maryland School of Nursing’s RICH 2.0 project, supported by the Maryland Community Health Resources Commission 2.0 collaboration. This initiative brings together 12 community organizations, creating a strong network that amplifies the impact of BHB’s initiatives in maternal and child health.

The event not only provided valuable health services but also strengthened the sense of community among fathers and father figures. By addressing both physical and emotional health, the program empowered participants to take proactive steps toward better well-being for themselves and their families.
