The University of Maryland School of Social Work (UMSSW) is dedicated to providing students with comprehensive career development opportunities through the Office of Student Affairs. These include licensure and exam preparation, resume and interview training, and access to UMSSW’s extensive job network.
Under the Professional Pathways…Building Your Social Work Future Series, the Office of Student Affairs organizes multiple events tailored to various practice areas such as outpatient community behavioral health, hospitals and healthcare, school-based settings, and state and federal opportunities. This series is specifically designed for graduating MSW students on the Baltimore Campus.
At the Universities at Shady Grove Campus (USG), career and networking events are held to connect social work students with alumni and agencies offering job openings in Montgomery County, DC, and Northern Virginia. Additionally, students enrolled in the Online Program can attend career development events at either the Baltimore or USG campus. With a network of over 750 agency partners, UMSSW enables graduating MSW students to focus their job search and fosters high-quality engagement between students and agencies.
“We're doing everything, and a lot of social workers or students didn't realize the depths of what social work does in a hospital. We are very, very appreciative of our partnership with the School of Social Work. The candidates have been irreplaceable. I don't know where I'd find candidates like this,” said Megan L. Pearlman, MSW, LCSW-C, Social Work Manager at University of Maryland Medical Center.
“There's a lot you can do in social work. I started researching it to see if it was something for me. Through the school, I got to attend an open house at the hospital, ask questions, and shadow in the Emergency Department. I signed up for on-the-spot hiring and got a call within a week,” shared Lola Adebayo, LMSW, SSW Class of 2024, Social Worker II – Neuro IMC/Cardiac Surgery PCU, University of Maryland Medical Center.
"The job fair was a great opportunity to not only make connections but become informed about all the job opportunities a social worker has in Maryland. My goal from the fair was to find a potential employer, and I additionally gained connections and resources with other agencies and individuals that have assisted me in my work today," Erica Wiskerchen, LMSW, MSW.
UMSSW not only equips future social workers and practitioners through coursework and rewarding practicum experiences but also provides student engagement, networking opportunities, and a supportive community to help navigate your career paths.
