The honor recognizes influential and respected leaders who are making a difference for students and universities in Maryland.
University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) President Bruce E. Jarrell, MD, FACS, has been named to The Daily Record’s 2025 Higher Education Power List, marking the fifth consecutive year he has received the recognition from the newspaper.
Chosen by the newspaper’s editors with input from readers, the honor recognizes the most significant, influential, and respected people in higher education in Maryland, according to The Daily Record.
“They are presidents and other senior administrators leading their colleges and universities, policymakers charting a course for the future, advocates striving to improve access and equity, and faculty members on the cutting edge of research and the liberal arts,” The Daily Record managing editor Patrick Brannan said.
“They are helping guide their institutions in the ever-changing field of education,” Brannan added. “Faced with growing challenges from the federal administration, questions about the cost and value of higher education, and various other issues, these leaders face the challenges head on. They are working for or with programs that aim to bring new technology or change to the region.”
Jarrell’s career at UMB has spanned nearly three decades, during which he has served as vice dean of academic affairs, dean of the University of Maryland School of Graduate Studies, executive vice president and provost, chief academic and research officer and senior vice president, and interim president before being named president in 2020.
The Daily Record asked Jarrell and the other honorees what they thought was the biggest challenge facing higher education institutions.
“Across higher education, we face the enormous challenge of staying true to our mission amid cuts to funding, research support, and student financial aid programs,” Jarrell said. “Although we all feel the impact of these cuts, I am continuously inspired by how the entire University of Maryland, Baltimore community has come together to ensure we never waver in our commitment to improve the human condition and serve the public good.”
