Office of Community and Civic Engagement Launches Fall Career Workshop Series
October 22, 2025 Lisa Rawlings
Workshops this fall include interview skills and résumé writing.
The Office of Community and Civic Engagement’s (OCCE) UMB Workforce Initiatives Fall Series began Oct. 15 with its first workshop, Resources for Job Seekers, held at the UMB Community Engagement Center (CEC).
This workshop was designed to support job seekers who are facing financial challenges while pursuing employment. Attendees learned about a range of free and supportive services available in the community.
Gladys Stanton from the Maryland CASH Campaign introduced several resources including:
- Free tax preparation services
- Financial coaching
- Benefits screening
- The Bank On Maryland program, which promotes access to safe and affordable banking
Leezette Bethea from the United Way of Central Maryland shared details about the Family Stability Program, which supports families with children living in the 21201, 21223, or 21230 ZIP codes. She also explained how to access the 211 resource hotline, a vital tool for connecting with local assistance programs.
By partnering with the Maryland CASH Campaign and the United Way of Central Maryland, this workshop fulfills the mission of OCCE, which serves as UMB’s liaison to communities on behalf of the Office of the President. Focusing on neighborhoods in West Baltimore that border the UMB campus, OCCE develops and nurtures Universitywide partnerships with K-12 public schools, community organizations, nonprofits, and local businesses. The office also coordinates faculty, staff, and student volunteer and service-learning initiatives to respond to needs identified by community partners.
The next workshops in the series are:
- Choosing a Great Training Program for You: Wednesday, Oct. 22, at 5 p.m.
- Writing Your Résumé: Wednesday, Nov. 12, at 5 p.m.
- Interview Skills: Wednesday, Dec. 10, at 5 p.m.
