Stay Cybersafe This Holiday Season

There are a few simple steps you can take to help keep UMB safe during the holidays, when hackers often try to take advantage of distractions and reduced staffing to launch attacks.
As we head into the holiday season, we want to thank everyone for helping to keep the University of Maryland, Baltimore's (UMB) technology and data secure throughout the year. Your efforts protect not only our systems but also the trust of our University community.
The holidays are a busy time, and unfortunately, hackers know that, too. They often try to take advantage of distractions and reduced staffing to launch attacks. Here are a few simple steps you can take to help keep UMB safe:
1. Be Alert for Suspicious Emails and Links
- Watch out for emails that look unusual or ask for personal information.
- Don’t click on links or open attachments unless you’re sure they’re safe.
- If something seems off, report it right away using the Phish Alert Button in Outlook.
2. Protect Your Accounts
- Use strong, unique passwords for all of your accounts.
- Never share your login information with anyone.
3. Secure Your Devices
- Keep your computer and phone updated with the latest software.
- Lock your screen when you step away.
- Avoid using public Wi-Fi for sensitive work unless you’re on UMB’s VPN or AVD.
4. Plan Ahead
- If you’ll be away, log out of systems and store devices securely.
- Know whom to contact if you notice something suspicious UMB Security and Compliance.
Cybersecurity is everyone’s responsibility. By staying alert and following these steps, we can all help ensure a safe and smooth holiday season for UMB.
