The 37th Annual Tuerk Conference on Mental Health and Addiction Treatment was held at the Baltimore Convention Center on April 29. It was co-sponsored by the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) and the Maryland chapter of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD).

The conference grew out of a lectureship named after the late Dr. Isadore Tuerk in the Division of Addiction Research and Training (DART) of the UMSOM Department of Psychiatry.

This year, the conference was sold out, with over 1,600 attendees and 110-plus sponsors. It is the largest one-day addiction event on the East Coast.  One highlight of the conference was the NCADD Chairman’s Award, which was given to Mayor Brandon Scott for his exceptional leadership in obtaining over $600 million for the city of Baltimore from the Opioid Overdose Restitution settlement.

UMSOM faculty and staff were instrumental to the planning and success of the conference, including Chris Welsh, MD, associate professor; Eric Weintraub, MD, professor; and conference chair Rob White, MA, adjunct assistant professor, all in the Department of Psychiatry.
