April 30, 2025 UMB Council for the Arts & CultureThe director of events at Maryland Carey Law and Westminster Hall is an art lover who appreciates all of the artistic and cultural opportunities that UMB and the city of Baltimore have to offer.
As part of its 10th anniversary celebration, the University of Maryland, Baltimore’s (UMB) Council for the Arts & Culture is featuring Q&As with its members on The Elm. This week, we kick off the series by shining the spotlight on Jessica Williams.
What is your name/school/job description at UMB?
Jessica Williams, director of events, University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law and Westminster Hall and Burying Ground. I oversee all events/meetings planned at the law school and manage historic Westminster Hall.
Why did you join the Council for the Arts & Culture?
I worked at a museum for approximately eight years doing marketing, assisting with exhibit installations, providing tours, managing aspects of museum operations, etc. I love museums, theatre, literature, film ... you name it! When I received an invitation to join the Council for the Arts & Culture, it was a definite YES. What is a piece of advice you would give to someone looking to get more involved in the arts?
Explore. There are so many forms of art, from architecture to pottery, from photography to music! Figure out your interest, and go from there! Baltimore has so many engaging opportunities. In our UMB neighborhood, we are surrounded by several theaters and local bookstores, and we’re part of the Bromo Arts District. The district is full of art organizations, performance venues, galleries and more.
What is your favorite arts council initiative or event?
1807: An Art and Literary Journal, of course! 1807 encourages members of the UMB community to express themselves creatively through art and the written word. Each year, community members submit their projects for a chance to be featured in the journal. This is an opportunity for me to view all entries and judge — and I am honored to do so! There are so many talented individuals showcasing their extraordinary art!
What’s your favorite type of art or artistic medium?
Currently, literary art tops my list! I am reading and listening to nonfiction. It’s the perfect opportunity to turn off the television and immerse yourself in a great story. Some of my recommended authors/books: “The Wedding People,” by Alison Espach; “Reel,” by Kennedy Ryan; “A Love Song for Ricki Wilde,” by Tia Williams.
