UMB Council for the Arts and Culture 10th Anniversary

The director of operations at the School of Dentistry is a lifelong Baltimorean who encourages people to explore all of the arts opportunities that the city has to offer.

As part of its 10th anniversary celebration, the University of Maryland, Baltimore’s (UMB) Council for the Arts & Culture is featuring Q&As with its members on The Elm. This week, we shine the spotlight on Randy Jacbos.

What is your name/school/job description at UMB?
Randy Jacobs, Director of Operations, University of Maryland School of Dentistry

Why did you join the Council for the Arts & Culture?
I joined the council because, as a lifelong Baltimorean, I have always been a supporter of the arts, particularly in our city. I have always encouraged others to attend the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the Hippodrome and Everyman theatres, museums, etc. I was interested in connecting the arts to the sciences and supporting the community.

Can you share a memorable experience from your time working with the arts council?
One of my favorite experiences was working with the Community Engagement Center’s neighborhood block party. We were able to provide many services, and the fair was a lot of fun for the adults and children — even though we dealt with some rough weather for one of the parties. I also enjoyed participating in the mural project and 1807: An Art and Literary Journal, which is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the talent within our UMB community.

What is a piece of advice that you would give to someone looking to get more involved in the arts?
I would say, “Take the first step”. Whatever interests you — it may be seeing an art show, watching a play, attending a concert — just go and do it. There are so many opportunities in our city, and the arts council promotes many of these activities.

Outside of your work on the council, what’s something people might not know about you?

People may not know how much of an animal lover I am. I have traveled to Utah five times (and I am definitely overdue) to volunteer at the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. I have done some volunteer work with Lab Rescue and adopted dogs through them. I hope to increase my volunteering at the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter, the Baltimore Humane Society, or other regional animal rescue organizations after I retire.
