Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week

The pantry and its partners shared resources and connected with students. Students can learn more at a Pantry Open Door Day on Dec. 3.

On Nov. 19, the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) Student Pantry hosted a campus tabling event in recognition of National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week. Partners from URecFit and Wellness, the UMB Student Counseling Center, and Black Acres Roastery joined the pantry to share resources and connect with students, offering support and coffee samples throughout the day.

Food and housing insecurity continue to impact college students nationwide, and UMB is no exception. Recent campus data shows that 29 percent of students worried their food would run out, 22 percent ran out of food without money to buy more, and 33 percent could not afford balanced meals. These realities highlight the importance of expanding awareness and ensuring that students know the pantry is here to help.

The UMB Student Pantry provides free groceries, personal care items, and essential household supplies to support student wellness and academic success. Students are encouraged to visit, use the resources, and share information with peers who may benefit.

Those interested in learning more can attend the upcoming Pantry Open Door Day on Tuesday, Dec. 3, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Students can tour the pantry, learn how to place online orders, and see a smart-locker pickup demonstration. Registration is available.

The pantry remains committed to reducing basic needs insecurity and ensuring that every student has access to the resources they need to thrive.
