Gov. Wes Moore has appointed Yaakov “Jake” Weissmann, MSW ’07, as acting secretary of the Maryland Department of Budget and Management (DBM). Weissmann will assume the role on Oct. 22, bringing with him more than a decade of experience in state and local government, higher education, and community engagement.
Weissmann most recently served as vice president for government relations and community affairs at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), where he led efforts to strengthen partnerships with policymakers and secure operating and capital funding for the institution.
Prior to his time at UMBC, Weissmann spent more than 10 years serving the Maryland State Senate, including roles as chief of staff to the late Senate President Thomas V. “Mike” Miller Jr. and current Senate President Bill Ferguson of Baltimore. Weissmann also served as an assistant chief administrative officer for Montgomery County, coordinating major initiatives in economic development, housing, and transportation.
“I am humbled and excited to serve under Governor Moore and to honor his administration’s commitment to fiscal responsibility, even during deeply challenging times,” Weissmann said in a statement from the governor’s office. “Working in collaboration with our partners in the Maryland General Assembly, we will ensure the steady management and administration of a balanced budget that delivers for all Marylanders.”
A graduate of the University of Maryland School of Social Work (UMSSW) and the University of Baltimore School of Law, Weissmann earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology and social work from UMBC.
“Jake’s appointment reflects the strength of his leadership and his deep commitment to public service,” said UMSSW Dean Judy L. Postmus, PhD, ACSW. “We are proud to see a School of Social Work alumnus leading in such a vital role for the state of Maryland.”
Moore praised Weissmann as “one of the most effective policy minds in our state,” citing his experience and dedication to fiscal responsibility.
