University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) President Bruce E. Jarrell, MD, FACS, has been honored by The Baltimore Sun with induction into the newspaper’s Business and Civic Hall of Fame.
Jarrell and 12 other inductees were recognized at an awards banquet June 3 at The Center Club in Baltimore and are featured in a Sun special section published June 7. The honorees were chosen for their leadership, vision, and profound contributions to help shape the Greater Baltimore area.
“I am incredibly honored to be inducted into The Baltimore Sun Hall of Fame alongside so many civic and business leaders who are committed to strengthening Baltimore and shaping its future,” Jarrell said. “Since arriving at UMB nearly 30 years ago, my family and I have been profoundly touched by this city and its people. Baltimore has welcomed us, challenged us, and inspired us in ways that we will cherish forever. It has been one of the greatest privileges of my life to serve as president of one of this city’s anchor institutions.”
The Sun noted that under his presidency, which began amidst the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Jarrell has worked to define UMB as a civic anchor committed to revitalizing the city and the area around its campus in West Baltimore.
For example, The Sun wrote, Jarrell’s administration has supported the transformation of Lexington Market into a community hub, opened the 4MLK building as a biotech and life sciences innovation center, and broken ground on a $120 million University of Maryland School of Social Work building that is due to open in mid-2027.
Another 2026 inductee with ties to UMB is Ben Cardin, JD ’67, a University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law graduate and former U.S. representative and senator. He was inducted alongside his wife, Myrna Cardin, a Towson University alumna and former member of the University System of Maryland Foundation.
