Digital Accessibility: Meetings and Events
April 15, 2026 UMB Office of Communications and Public Affairs
Planning accessible events helps support UMB’s commitment to inclusion and ensures that programs and activities are welcoming to students and the public.
Digital accessibility begins with awareness and action across the UMB community. New federal regulations that take effect April 24 require public universities, including UMB, to ensure that their websites, course content, digital documents, and online tools are accessible to the public and students with disabilities to access our programs, services, and activities. Over the next few months, we will be sharing information and tips each week in “The Elm Weekly.”
UMB encourages meeting and event organizers to plan with accessibility in mind so all students and members of the public can participate fully.
Virtual meeting tools should support screen readers, keyboard navigation, and live or automated captioning.
For in-person meetings, planners should select accessible venues, provide clear directions and parking information, and ensure physical spaces accommodate mobility devices.
Event materials and communications should also be accessible, including digital invitations, registration forms, presentations, and videos. Organizers are encouraged to include a contact for accessibility questions and plan for services such as captioning, sign language interpreters, or other accessibility needs.
