Digital accessibility begins with awareness and action across the UMB community. New federal regulations that take effect in April 2027 require public universities, including UMB, to ensure that their websites, course content, digital documents, and online tools are accessible to the public and students with disabilities to access our programs, services, and activities. We will be sharing information and tips in “The Elm Weekly.”
Social media is an important way UMB shares information, but posts can unintentionally create barriers. A few simple practices can make your content easier for everyone to access and understand.
When creating a post:
- Keep important information in the post text: Don’t rely on an image alone to communicate dates, locations, or calls to action.
- Use emojis with purpose: Too many emojis can make content difficult for screen-reader users to navigate.
- Review before posting: Use UMB’s Social Media Accessibility Checklist to check your content before it goes live.
