Digital Accessibility: Use Web Content When Possible
October 07, 2026 UMB Office of Communications and Public Affairs
Choose the format that makes your information easiest for everyone to access.
Digital accessibility begins with awareness and action across the UMB community. New federal regulations that take effect in April 2027 require public universities, including UMB, to ensure that their websites, course content, digital documents, and online tools are accessible to the public and students with disabilities to access our programs, services, and activities. We will be sharing information and tips in “The Elm Weekly.”
When sharing information online, consider whether a PDF is really necessary. Accessible web content is often easier for people to find, navigate, and use with assistive technology.
Whenever possible:
- Choose web content: HTML can provide a more accessible experience than a PDF.
- Consider alternatives: Word or other accessible formats may be appropriate when web content isn’t practical.
- Think about your audience: Choose the format that makes your information easiest for everyone to access.
