Issue 7 of UMB’s art and literary journal featuring stunning visual artwork, photography, and poetry has been released for purchase.

We’re excited to announce that 1807: An Art & Literary Journal Issue 7 is hot off the press and ready for you to enjoy! This latest issue celebrates the remarkable creative talents across our UMB community. Inside, you’ll find a rich range of artistic expressions — including inspiring poetry to striking visual art.

An excerpt from the foreword, from UMB President Bruce E. Jarrell, MD, FACS, summarizes what you’ll find in this issue: “Seven issues strong, 1807 continues to capture our collective imagination. Each new edition builds upon the last, offering fresh perspectives, bold imagery, and words that challenge, inspire, and connect us. The pages of this journal remind us that creativity is not confined to the arts alone — it is embedded in the research we pursue, the care we provide, the lessons we teach, and the impact we make across Baltimore and beyond.”

Highlights from Issue 7 include:

  • Stunning visual artwork that explores identity, place, and emotion through painting, digital media, and mixed materials.
  • Photography that captures beauty and nuance in everyday moments, inviting readers to pause and see the world through a new lens.
  • Poetry that reflects on resilience, connection, and the human experience — voices that speak with honesty and heart.

The beautiful cover art, “A Walk in the Rain,” is a soothing blue-tone painting by Jonathan Jeffries, MSN, RN, CCRN, a University of Maryland School of Nursing student. Amid trees and a sidewalk covered in rain, a petite, lone figure walks with an umbrella under the shimmer of the streetlights. Jeffries began painting in December 2024 as a way to unwind and cope with stress, and it quickly grew into a deep passion. His work often reflects places he has lived or vivid memories from his travels and service.

The back cover features photographic art by Christopher Welsh, MD, from the School of Medicine called “Iceland Puffin in the Rain.” The bright orange on the puffin’s beak pops against the dark and light colors of the bird’s head. Also embellishing the back cover is an excerpt from a poem by Kathy Jankowiak, RN, School of Nursing alumnus, called “Wholeness.” As with previous issues, the interior features poetry, paintings, photography, woodworking, metalwork, textile art, and other creative expressions — offering a vibrant range of color, form, texture, and style. Yet each issue presents entirely new, previously unpublished work that is sure to delight both the avid art connoisseur and the casual admirer alike.

Jennifer B. Litchman, MA, editor in chief of 1807; founder and chair of UMB's Council for the Arts & Culture; and chief external relations officer and senior vice president, reflects in her foreword on the state of division in our communities, country, and world, saying: “Art brings people together because it speaks to our shared human experiences that go beyond our politics, our affiliations, and our reactions to world events. Where politics and ideology can divide us, art brings us together.”
