IT Spring Cleaning: Refresh Your Tech
April 14, 2026 Kris Nicklas
Simple IT “spring cleaning” tips to improve device performance, security, and overall tech experience.
Spring is a great time to refresh more than just your workspace — it's also the perfect opportunity to give your technology a little care. A quick IT spring cleaning can help improve performance, reduce frustration, and keep your information more secure.
Here are a few simple, high-impact ways to freshen up your tech this season.
Clear Your Browser Cache and Cookies
If websites are acting oddly, pages aren’t loading correctly, or you’re not seeing recent updates, your browser may be holding on to outdated data. Clearing your browser’s cache and cookies can help load the most current version of pages and resolve common sign-in or display issues. Use CITS’ step-by-step instructions to clear your cache for all major browsers, including Chrome, Edge, Safari, and Firefox.
Review and Remove Unused Apps or Extensions
Over time, we all accumulate browser extensions and software we no longer use. Take a few minutes to remove browser add-ons you don’t recognize or no longer need, uninstall applications you haven’t used in months, and disable extensions that may slow down your browser or create security risks.
Clean Up Passwords and Sign-Ins
Spring cleaning is also a good reminder to check your digital security habits. Update weak or reused passwords, remove saved sign-ins on shared or public devices, and make sure your devices lock automatically when not in use.
Organize and Back Up Your Files
Cluttered desktops and overflowing download folders make it harder to find what you need. Delete files you no longer need, move important documents to approved storage locations, and confirm important data is backed up properly.
Make IT Spring Cleaning a Habit
You don’t have to do everything at once. Picking one or two of these steps can still improve your day-to-day tech experience. Making IT spring cleaning an annual habit helps keep your devices running smoothly all year long.
