The American Pharmacists Association-Academy of Student Pharmacists demonstrated an outstanding commitment to fostering community, belonging, leadership development, collaboration, and innovation.

The American Pharmacists Association-Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA ASP) at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy has been selected as the inaugural recipient of the University Student Government Association (USGA) Student Organization Leadership Award, earning a unanimous rating of "exceptional" across all award criteria.

Throughout the 2025-2026 academic year, APhA ASP demonstrated an outstanding commitment to fostering community, belonging, leadership development, collaboration, and innovation, values deeply aligned with the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) USGA's mission and core principles.

Building Belonging and Community

APhA ASP cultivated a highly welcoming and connected environment through 98 events that engaged students across class years and disciplines. Signature programs such as the Welcome Back Social and APhA ASPalooza brought together hundreds of student pharmacists, creating opportunities for connection, engagement, and early integration into campus life. Wellness-focused initiatives and general body programming further reinforced peer support during high stress periods, ensuring students felt seen, supported, and valued. Beyond the School of Pharmacy, APhA ASP strengthened campuswide belonging through participation in interprofessional initiatives such as the UMB Wellness Fair, helping bridge connections across disciplines and contribute to a more inclusive UMB community.

Exemplary Student Leadership Development

APhA ASP provides students with meaningful, hands-on leadership experiences rooted in empathy, inclusivity, adaptability, critical thinking, and courage. Through seven major patient care initiatives, hundreds of student pharmacists engaged in real-world leadership, including extensive involvement in Operation Immunization and large-scale clinical outreach events such as the HSHSL Flu Clinic. Students developed evidence-guided decision-making and patient-centered communication skills by addressing vaccine hesitancy, translating complex health information into accessible education, and tailoring outreach for diverse populations. Structured leadership roles, mentorship opportunities, and professional development programming further reinforced long-term leadership growth within the organization.

Engagement, Collaboration, and Service

APhA ASP demonstrated exceptional engagement in campus life through monthly programming and partnerships with more than 20 campus and community organizations. Collaborations with groups such as the International Pharmaceutical Students’ Federation, International Students’ Organization, and multiple public health and professional organizations supported interprofessional learning, cultural exchange, and service to the public good. The organization’s community impact extended well beyond campus. Through clinics, school outreach, cultural festivals, and public health education initiatives, APhA ASP reached thousands of patients, students, and community members, reinforcing UMB’s commitment to service, access, and health equity.

Innovation and Adaptability in Action

Innovation is a defining feature of APhA ASP’s work. The organization launched and expanded initiatives such as Why Vaccines Matter: Myth vs. Fact, interactive vaccine education tools for children, and an enhanced Little Free Library program distributing evidence-based health education materials on overdose prevention, cancer awareness, and chronic disease management. APhA ASP’s ability to adapt programming to expand access — such as increasing student participation in immunization efforts and introducing new cultural and global health collaborations, reflects a sustained commitment to responsiveness, creativity, and community need.

Recognition Beyond Campus

In addition to this USGA honor, APhA ASP’s initiatives have earned national recognition, including Chapter of the Year and multiple awards at the APhA 2026 Annual Meeting and Exposition, as well as regional awards across several patient care and public health initiatives. These distinctions further affirm the organization’s leadership, impact, and excellence.

As the inaugural Student Organization Leadership Award recipient, APhA ASP sets a powerful standard for student organizations at UMB, demonstrating how sustained engagement, inclusive leadership, and innovative programming can strengthen campus community and advance the public good.
