“Educators should not have to carry the torch of our children alone. The combination of educators and social workers is pure magic.” Wendy Shaia
The Positive Schools Center at the University of Maryland School of Social Work (UMSSW) celebrated 10 years of innovation, equity, and responsive support for Maryland schools and communities during an event attended by principals, administrators, teachers, staff, and community partners. Held on the University of Maryland, Baltimore’s campus, the anniversary luncheon included interactive drummers honoring ancestral history, leadership, and teamwork; and fireside chats sharing the perspective of local schools and principals positively impacted by the work of the Positive Schools Center.
“They became like family. The staff know them. The students know them." Tiffany Halsey, principal at Belair Edison and panelist.
The fireside chats discussed a range of topics, including meeting children and families where they are, educating children post-pandemic, and supporting teachers in their roles.
The Positive Schools Center was also honored with a certificate from Mayor Brandon Scott presented by Debra Brooks, Mayor’s Office of Children & Family Success, for the program’s commitment to Baltimore area schools.
Wendy Shaia, executive director of the UMSSW’s Center for Restorative Change (CRC), in which the Positive Schools Center is a program, recognized the collaborative work of the CRC’s programs in helping to support children and families in West Baltimore and beyond.
