The Office of Community and Civic Engagement collaborates with NPower Baltimore to expand access to technology and bridge the digital divide for older adults in the city.

The University of Maryland, Baltimore’s (UMB) Office of Community and Civic Engagement (OCCE) recently hosted its second laptop giveaway in partnership with NPower Baltimore at the Community Engagement Center (CEC), helping bridge the digital divide for older adults in the local community.

The giveaway was open to Baltimore City residents age 60 and older and provided eligible seniors with free laptops on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies lasted. Through this collaboration, 60 city residents received laptops, expanding access to technology and digital resources.

A key component of the event was the support provided by NPower’s Community Helpdesk staff, who attended the giveaway to assist seniors with setting up and getting started on their new laptops. Staff members offered hands-on guidance to help recipients navigate their devices and begin using them with confidence.

Beyond the giveaway, NPower’s Community Helpdesk continues to provide technology assistance Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Available services include:

  • Software support
  • Computer troubleshooting
  • Home internet assistance
  • Hardware support

The successful giveaway reflects OCCE’s and NPower Baltimore’s shared commitment to promoting digital inclusion and ensuring that community members have the technology and support needed to thrive in today’s digital world. Access to computers and reliable technical assistance can help older adults stay connected with family and friends, access health care and community services, pursue educational opportunities, and engage more fully online.
