UMB Drone Program Takes Flight to Support Campus Safety and Operations

New aerial technology helps UMB assess emergencies, inspect facilities, and make informed decisions while protecting community privacy.
Students, faculty, and staff may notice something new in the skies above the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) campus: a drone operated by UMB's Office of Emergency Management (OEM).
UMB's Drone Program is now conducting flights to enhance emergency preparedness, support campus operations, and provide a safer, more efficient way to assess conditions across the University.
The drone provides a bird's-eye view that can help University personnel identify potential hazards, assess damage, and make informed decisions.
For example, following severe weather, the drone can help assess rooftop damage without requiring personnel to climb onto potentially unsafe structures. Thermal imaging can help identify signs of water intrusion or building maintenance concerns. During an emergency, aerial imagery can provide responders and University leadership with a clearer understanding of conditions on the ground.
The program also supports UMB Facilities Management, Design and Construction, Environmental Health and Safety, and the Office of the Fire Marshal through building inspections, construction monitoring, and other operational activities.
Flying Safely and Respecting Privacy
UMB recognizes that the use of drones raises important questions about privacy.
The Drone Program is operated by trained OEM personnel in accordance with Federal Aviation Administration regulations, University procedures, and constitutional and privacy protections.
Each flight serves a specific, authorized purpose. The program is not intended for random surveillance or routine law enforcement patrols. UMB's drone is not equipped with facial recognition technology or weapons.
The program reflects UMB's commitment to using innovative technology responsibly, improving situational awareness while protecting the privacy and trust of the University community.

UMB is committed to transparency about its drone operations. Community members can learn more about the program, including its capabilities, privacy commitments, and a publicly accessible dashboard of recent flights, by visiting the UMB Drone Program webpage.
