On May 13, four University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) experts on aging were the featured speakers at the Enoch Pratt Free Library’s “Serving Up Wisdom” community event, which drew about 60 seniors from the community.

The focus of the event, which was held at the Central Library a few blocks from UMB, was to help seniors be more empowered by learning ways to stay active, maintaining independence at home, and finding trustworthy health information.

Our speakers and sessions included:

  • “Aging in Place/Quality of Life” with Diane Martin, PhD, MA, associate professor of gerontology, University of Maryland School of Graduate Studies, and director of UMB’s Geriatrics & Gerontology Research Program
  • “Move More!” with Stephanie McCorvey, DP, PT, who is a PhD candidate with a gerontology focus at the University of Maryland School of Medicine
  • “Reliable Health Resources for Seniors” with Emily Hurst, MSLS, dean and associate vice provost, Health Sciences and Human Services Library (HSHSL), and Faith Steele, MLS, MIM, executive director, Network of National Library of Medicine, Region 1, HSHSL

“We were delighted to partner with the Pratt as its mission to improve lives in Baltimore is very much in line with ours at UMB,” Martin said. “UMB is an Age-Friendly University, and our Academy of Lifelong Learning brings together our experts on aging for opportunities such as this. We are committed to engaging and leading in a society that is aging. Our goal is to do more of these events to interact with seniors and their caregivers in Baltimore and around Maryland.”
