Joins us at a Town Hall on May 20 to learn about CITS’ yearlong initiative to modernize UMB’s telecommunications system by moving to Microsoft Teams for calling.
The Center for Information Technology Services is launching a yearlong initiative to modernize the University of Maryland, Baltimore's (UMB) telecommunications system by moving to Microsoft Teams for calling. This will bring chat, video, and phone into a single app your teams already use, while reducing technology costs across the University.
We want this transition to work around your needs and timing. Whether you're ready to learn more, weigh options, or help shape how the rollout unfolds, we'd love to hear from you. You’re also cordially invited to attend our Town Hall meeting, "Making the Switch to Microsoft Teams Calling" on Wednesday, May 20, from 3-4 p.m. Register for the "Making the Switch to Microsoft Teams Calling" Town Hall today.
What We've Learned
Over the past few months, we've tested Teams calling with a small cross-campus group, and the results have been positive. Participants have shared helpful feedback that is shaping the broader rollout.
We'd like to extend that same opportunity to you. As we move into the next phase, we're inviting schools and departments to join the conversation, bring their perspectives forward, raise questions, and help shape a rollout that works across the University.
Key Considerations
- Teams-only calling. For people who don't need a physical desk phone, this is the simplest and most cost-effective path.
- Teams with a physical phone. For roles that require a handset, we'll review the available hardware options with you.
- A timeline built around you. When you're ready to transition, we'll partner with you on a schedule designed to minimize disruption to your day-to-day work.
Getting Involved
To learn more, please visit the MS Teams Calling FAQ page. To start a conversation about what this could look like for your school or department, contact sdtelecom@umaryland.edu.
We know a change like this touches daily routines across the University, and we want to get it right. The best way to do that is together, with input from the people who'll use this system every day. We're looking forward to hearing from you.
