April 09, 2026 Anita Bryant
Her leadership experience, including as UMBC Faculty Senate President, prepares her to guide the program’s next stage of growth.
The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) has appointed Nancy Kusmaul, PhD, MSW, as chair and associate dean of the Social Work Program, effective July 1, 2026.
A longtime colleague and partner through UMBC’s collaboration with UMSSW, Kusmaul is widely respected for her thoughtful, collaborative leadership; her deep commitment to social work education; and her nationally recognized scholarship in aging, long-term care, and trauma-informed systems. She brings a systems perspective and a strong dedication to expanding opportunity and reducing barriers for students, faculty, and staff.
Kusmaul’s appointment reflects the confidence and support of UMBC’s social work faculty, as well as the university's commitment to advancing social work education. Her extensive leadership experience — including service as president of the UMBC Faculty Senate — positions her well to guide the program through its next stage of growth and innovation.
UMSSW leadership also recognized Shelly Wiechelt, PhD, MSW, who has served with distinction as associate dean and chair of the BSW program at UMBC. Wiechelt’s leadership has been instrumental in advancing the program, including the successful CSWE reaffirmation, curriculum updates aligned with the 2022 Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards, and advocacy across the UMBC and UMB campuses. Her work has significantly strengthened the program’s foundation and visibility.
Please join UMSSW and UMBC in congratulating Dr. Kusmaul on her new role and thanking Dr. Wiechelt for her outstanding service and leadership.
