Ethics and Compliance Week. United in Integrity: Accountable for Impact

A week of virtual sessions, campus tabling, a resource fair, and a celebration of Compliance Champions shows that doing the right thing is something we do together.

Most of the time, compliance and ethics at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) happen quietly. A researcher double-checks a disclosure. A staff member pauses before sending a file with student information. A colleague asks, “Is this the right way to do this?” before moving ahead. Those small moments add up, and from Nov. 2 to 6, UMB is putting them in the spotlight.

This year’s theme for Ethics and Compliance Week is "United in Integrity: Accountable for Impact."

Why This Theme, and Why Now?

The theme was chosen to connect directly to what UMB is and where it is headed. It builds on our core value of Respect and Integrity, which calls on all of us to hold ourselves accountable for acting ethically and transparently. It also echoes United for Impact, one of the themes of UMB’s new 2027-2031 Strategic Plan.

United in Integrity recognizes that an ethical culture isn’t the job of a single office. It’s shaped every day by faculty, staff, and students across every school and unit. Accountable for Impact is a reminder that our choices travel. In the lab, the classroom, the clinic, and the office, the decisions we make reach colleagues, students, patients, research participants, and the communities we serve.

The goal of the week is simple: Make sure everyone knows the resources available to support them, and where to go when a question comes up.

What’s Happening

  • Kickoff: Monday, Nov. 2, 11:30 a.m. (virtual): The week opens with welcome messages from UMB’s president, provost, and chief accountability officer, followed by "Our Voices, United," a session on contributing to a speak-up culture at UMB.
  • Live virtual sessions all week: Subject matter experts from across campus will lead sessions on compliance topics that matter to our work, so you can join from anywhere.
  • Outreach and tabling across campus: Look for compliance partners at tables in buildings around campus, ready to answer questions, share resources, and hand out giveaways.
  • Compliance and Ethics Resource Fair, Wednesday, Nov. 4, beginning at noon, SMC Campus Center: Meet offices from across UMB in one place and learn how they can help.
  • Online activities: Share how you make an impact, complete the Accountability Crossword, and test yourself the Compliance and Ethics Trivia Contest. Participants are entered into prize drawings.

A Celebration to Close the Week

The week wraps up on Friday, Nov. 6, with a hybrid Closing Ceremony in Elm Room A at the SMC Campus Center at 11 a.m. Join as we honor this year’s Compliance Champion nominees who are faculty, staff, and students recognized by their peers for the positive impact they make. We’ll also announce our door prize winners from the events.
